"Allāhumma innī as'aluka al-'āfiyata fī al-dunyā wal-ākhira…" asks Allah for āfiyah, soundness, protection and wholeness, across faith, worldly affairs, family and wealth all at once. It's recorded in Sunan Abī Dāwūd (5074) and is fitting for weeks when there is a lot to hold.
Why This Dua Matters
There are weeks when the thing you're most aware of is how much there is to hold. It's not always one large thing. More often it's the full spread of a life: the faith you're trying to maintain, the work you're trying to do with integrity, the family you're trying to show up for, the charitable acts you put into the world.
The companion who asked the Prophet (PBUH) what to ask Allah (SWT) for was told one word: Āfiyah. Soundness, protection, wholeness, protection from harm in every form. The Prophet (PBUH) considered it the most comprehensive single request a person could make. Not because it was vague. Because it covered everything.
The Dua in Arabic, Transliteration & Translation
Transliteration
Allāhumma innī asʾaluka al-ʿāfiyata fī al-dunyā wal-ākhira. Allāhumma innī asʾaluka al-ʿafwa wal-ʿāfiyata fī dīnī wa dunyāya wa ahlī wa mālī.
“O Allah, I ask You for wellbeing in this world and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and wellbeing in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth.”
How to Make This Dua Part of Your Week
When the week is asking you to choose between the things you are protecting
This dua holds all four together (dīnī wa dunyāya wa ahlī wa mālī) because they are not meant to be ranked against each other. Asking for āfiyah in all four is the only kind of protection that actually works.
When you want to pray for someone else's wholeness
Look closely. The pardon comes before the wellbeing. What cannot be undone is pardoned first, and then the wellbeing is built on what remains. Say this dua for someone whose life you want to see held together.
When your giving this Friday is an act of protecting what you've been given
The Prophet (PBUH) described sadaqah as a protection. Your giving this Friday is one of the acts that earns the āfiyah this dua is asking for.
